Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar is playing on a completely different level than his competition right now. And he has the stats to back him up.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, the 23-year-old Calgary native is the third defenseman in NHL history to record a point on five consecutive team goals in the Stanley Cup Final.

The other two defensemen to pull off the feat are Paul Coffey and Eddie Bush. Coffey did it in 1895 when the then 23-year-old star led the Edmonton Oilers to the Stanley Cup.

Bush did it with the Detroit Red Wings way back in 1942. The then 23-year-old only scored seven points that postseason. And five of them came in Game 3 in the Final against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs went on to win the Cup.

Since being drafted fourth overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, Makar has become one of the league's brightest stars. He was recently named the Norris Trophy winner as the top defenseman in the league. He also won the Calder Trophy as the best rookie in 2019-20.

Makar set the league on fire with 28 goals and 86 points in 2021-22. In the postseason, he has added seven goals and 26 points. The Avalanche are currently battling the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2022 Stanley Cup Final.

“It’s impressive what he’s been able to do in such a short time in his career and there is not enough you can say about him,” said 35-year-old teammate Andrew Cogliano.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a focus in a younger player like him in my whole career, how he approaches the game, how he prepares. With him, it’s the habits that make him special.”
