The Calgary Flames are in the midst of a division in the NHL's western conference. On Saturday, they received news that they will have to go on without forward Sean Monahan for the rest of the season. Monahan is reportedly set for surgery to repair his torn labrum in his right hip.

Despite not having as productive a season as Monahan is accustomed to, it's still a tough loss for a team with championship aspirations. NHL.com correspondent Aaron Vickers captured the thoughts of Flames general manager Brad Treliving.

“It's unfortunate. The good news in here is he's got a lot of time to get this addressed. He had his other hip, his left hip, done last year (May 2021) and it feels great and he's doing wonderful. This is now sort of the next challenge for him… But no question a great deal of disappointment. We talked a lot yesterday. At the end of the day it is what it is. When your body is telling you you can't do it, you can't do it. We'll get it fixed and move forward.”

The Flames star forward was once an elite offensive option, with a goal scoring prowess. However, injuries and age have crept up on him over the last couple of years. Monahan only had 23 points (eight goals and 15 assists) this season. His -15 plus minus rating was the worst on the Calgary roster.

The Flames Pacific Division lead has been reduced to only three points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings. However, they do hold three games in hand over them, so all is not lost for Calgary.
