Kelly Oubre Jr. has drawn fans not only attending his games, but also within the Washington Wizards organization, including owner Ted Leonsis and head coach Scott Brooks, who have great aspirations for his future.

The Wizards have committed large sums to their core within the last two years, rewarding the likes of Bradley Beal, Otto Porter Jr., and John Wall with generous multi-year extensions that are bound to keep the roster intact for the foreseeable future.

One caveat is the limitations it creates as far as flexibility is concerned, making any big-time free agent signings that much more remote, as well as retaining their own personnel.

Yet Leonsis is hopeful the dynamic Kansas star could remain in Washington come 2019, when he is due for a big paycheck as a two-way commodity with plenty of upside.

“He’s another great, high-character kid with great athletic skills. And yeah, he wants to be where these guys are,” Leonsis told CSN Mid-Atlantic. “Our coach really, really likes him. He thinks he can be a difference maker. He kind of has that X-factor in his game.”

Regardless of these contract-loaded next few years, Leonsis insists money isn't an issue.

“So yeah, he’s going to come back and work really, really hard and challenge us to pay him a lot of money, too, which I’m glad to do,” he said. “I think that that is important, that young players realize we would much rather pay them to stay with the organization than think the grass is greener and that some free agent from some other team is going to come in and make a big difference for us.”

The Wizards proved to be a threat in the East, challenging the likes of the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics during the regular season and inching closer to prominence with their playoff output. Oubre stepped up as an integral part of the team, making him a diamond worth polishing for this franchise.
