Wide receiver Kenny Britt was released by the New England Patriots on Wednesday after dealing with a hamstring injury for most of the summer.

According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, Britt was actually offered a contract extension earlier this summer that he turned down.

It's unclear if that contract extension was before or after his hamstring injury, but it showed that the Patriots were serious about having him around long term. A player can't play if they can't get on the field and it appears the team just got sick of waiting for Britt to come along and get healthy.

Even though he was injured the release by the Patriots still came as quite the shock. The Patriots seem to have a real need at receiver, especially with Julian Edelman suspended for the first four games of the season. Edelman thinks they should be okay and has been impressed with what those inside the receivers room have shown so far during training camp.

“We've got a lot of guys making a lot of plays, a lot of guys working hard, and a lot of guys improving. Honestly, that's all you can ask for,” Edelman said via ESPN. “We've got a group in there that's very capable — a lot of explosion, a lot of quickness, a lot of experience. I'm not a talent evaluator, not a coach, not a GM; you'd have to ask those guys about that. But I'm excited for their opportunity, and I'm definitely confident in them.”

It's unclear if the Patriots will end up bringing in another receiver but it appears right now they have no interest in Dez Bryant according to NFL media.
