Former Cleveland Cavaliers general manager David Griffin is finalizing a deal to become the next President of Basketball Operations of the New Orleans Pelicans, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Danny Ferry removed himself from consideration for the Pelicans' general manager position on Friday. New Orleans fired Dell Demps on Feb 15, 2019.

David Griffin was the architect of the Cavs' 2016 championship team which defeated the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. Griffin and Cavs owner Dan Gilbert had different visions for the franchise and the two agreed to part ways on June 20, 2017.

Griffin was working with NBA TV as an analyst. Now, he will be tasked with trying to trade Pelicans star Anthony Davis this summer. Davis has requested a trade and is expected to be moved in the offseason.

The Los Angeles Lakers are widely expected to reach out to the Pelicans again. The Purple and Gold desperately tried to acquire Davis at the February trade deadline but were rejected. It will be interesting to see if Griffin and LeBron James' relationship comes into play with any potential Lakers-Pelicans trade talks centered on Davis.

New Orleans hasn't been past the first round of the playoffs since 2008. Davis won his first and only playoff series with the franchise last season.
