Shenmue 3 is the Epic Games Store's first Holiday Mystery Gift Giveaway title, the first of fifteen. The game will be free to get from the Epic Games Store until the next mystery game gets revealed the next day.
Shenmue 3 used to be the most anticipated game ever. While kicking off Epic Games Store's Holiday Mystery Gift Giveaway with it is still a big deal, it shows how far Shenmue 3 has fallen from grace.
Shenmue 3 was released after four years of Kickstarter backing to mixed reviews. On Metacritic, the game currently holds a 69 Metascore for PC, which is nice and all, but not very good. The game's PS4 version has a 67 Metascore. Shenmue 3 is also an odd selection for Epic Games Store's first title for their Holiday Mystery Gift Giveaway. Most of those who wanted it were big fans of the first two Shenmue games. This third one follows up on the first two's stories, and newcomers to the series might not be able to fully appreciate Shenmue 3. The game is also very clunky, very much unlike any other game in existence, and might be too frustrating for players to go through. But getting the game for free might even be the only thing that will get some people to try out Shenmue at all, so that's probably what' they're gunning for here.
Let's just hope whatever Epic Games paid for this freebie will get them their money's worth.
