The right-hander signed a <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/33673266/chicago-white-sox-signing-rhp-johnny-cueto-minor-league-deal" rel="noopener">one-year minor league deal</a> up to $4.2 million, with the potential for reductions in pay based on the days he would spend in the minor leagues.</p><p>“He’s a pitcher as opposed to a thrower,” White Sox manager Tony La Russa said in April. “It’s an exciting move.</p><p>“We’re looking forward to it. We’re anxious to get him here and the (Charlotte Knights). It’s a very positive move for us.”</p><p>Johnny Cueto earned two All-Star selections in 2014 and 2016 with the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants, respectively. Bassitt’s deal will pay him the third-highest average annual salary among starting pitchers signed during this year’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/carlos-rodon-orioles-4-post-mlb-winter-meetings-free-agency-predictions" rel="noopener">MLB free agency</a> period.</p><p>The Blue Jays’ deal also includes a limited no-trade clause, in which the veteran right-hander can notify the club of eight teams per year that he does not desire to be traded to, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.</p><p>The Blue Jays made it clear heading into the winter that starting pitching was a point of emphasis for them.</p><p>Well, they ended up signing a pretty darn good pitcher in Chris Bassitt. The Toledo, Ohio native has made one All-Star team in eight seasons, which has seen him play for the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics and New York Mets.</p><p>Bassitt has pitched to a 3.45 ERA in his career, but in some ways, 2022 was arguably his most impressive year.</p><p>Pitching for a Mets staff that featured aces Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer, Bassitt was New York’s most reliable hurler, turning in a career-best 181 2/3 innings pitched while fanning 167 batters and winning a career-high 15 games.</p><p>He’ll slot into a Blue Jays rotation that already features the likes of budding star Alex Manoah and talented right-hander Kevin Gausman.</p><p>It’s a pretty impressive 1-2-3 punch for the Blue Jays, who needed to strike quickly with Carlos Rodon and Chris Bassitt the best of the remaining starters in MLB free agency.</p><p>A contending Toronto team just got better.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

An All-Star in 2021, Bassitt has carried over that form in New York, pitching to the tune of a 3.44 ERA in 165 innings pitched (27 starts). But amidst all the franchise’s drama over the past decades, Bassitt wasn’t quite sure what to expect <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-complete-major-trade-for-oakland-athletics-pitcher-chris-bassitt/">when he arrived in New York</a> from the Oakland Athletics back in March.</p><p>In fact, <a href="https://www.si.com/mlb/2022/09/16/new-mets-daily-cover">according to Stephanie Apstein of Sports Illustrated</a>, Bassitt felt alarmed when he received news of his impending move to the Big Apple.</p><p>“It sounded like it was a mess,” Bassitt said, but he quickly realized that the Mets’ culture shift was already well underway. “Then I got to spring training and was like, ‘Oh, this isn’t like that at all.’”</p><p>Chris Bassitt, after nine seasons in the league, knows just how important accountability is to a team’s success, and he was pleasantly surprised with how mature the Mets players are in terms of wanting to improve and wanting to learn from their mistakes.</p><p>“I knew the names, but I didn’t know the personalities, so I didn’t know who could handle what,” Bassitt added. “Overall, I think, we have a locker room full of guys that like to be pushed, and that’s exciting. I think that’s honestly one of the biggest reasons why we’re good this year.”</p><p>Bassitt credited Max Scherzer, in particular, for providing leadership among the Mets’ troop of quality pitchers. In particular, Scherzer urges his fellow pitchers to come up to him and fellow ace Jacob deGrom for advice, and if there’s anyone you’d like to ask for pitching advice, it’s those two.</p><p>“The best part is it’s not just one guy. We have five veteran pitchers,” Bassitt explained. “[…] We’re all basically looking at Max and Jake [deGrom] and those guys and saying, like, ‘Please mess up so we can jump down your throat.’”</p><p>Chris Bassitt is now confident in the Mets’ chances after experiencing firsthand a franchise turnaround that’s been a long time coming. Led by veterans Scherzer and deGrom, as well as shortstop Francisco Lindor, Bassitt knows the Mets have as good a chance as any team to make some noise come postseason time.</p><p>“We’re not trying to play until the end of September,” Bassitt declared. “We’re trying to play until November.”</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

And, most recently, Chris Bassitt was placed on the IL due to COVID-19.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-new-york-makes-big-chris-bassitt-move-amid-jacob-degrom-max-scherzer-injury-concerns/">Bassitt</a> self-tested and reported a positive COVID-19 test last week, forcing him to miss his expected start against the Texas Rangers last Friday. The Mets pitcher <a href="https://twitter.com/SNYtv/status/1545135733735825408?s=20&amp;t=keUalZqu8903i_96v9bsVg">said</a> he wasn’t sick but was forced to miss time anyway.</p><p>What’s Chris Bassitt’s solution to COVID-positive but otherwise healthy players missing time?</p><blockquote>“Stop testing it,” he told reporters on Thursday. “Stop acting like COVID is far worse than a lot of other things. Not trying to get too much into it, but I was never sick, never had a symptom…I guess the answer is, I should’ve never said anything. I should never have said I tested positive. Bassitt said he felt “sluggish” and “tired” during the second game of the Mets’ two-game home series against the Houston Astros. He said that he had his young daughter and his teammates in mind when he decided to take the test.</p><p>Ultimately, he isn’t sure if he made the right choice.</p><p>“I don’t know if I made the right decision of saying something or not.”</p><p>However, moving forward, it doesn’t seem too likely that Bassitt will be testing if he experiences minor symptoms again.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
