Becky Hammon has finally done it. After more than 7 years on the San Antonio Spurs sidelines, the well-respected assistant coach has earned her first head coaching gig. Becky Hammon is signing with the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces on a record-breaking deal to be their new head coach, according to Shams Charania.

As for Bill Laimbeer, the former Aces head coach plans to step aside for the former Spurs assistant coach, possibly taking on a front office role for the team.

Becky Hammon’s decision to be the head coach the Las Vegas Aces is surprising for multiple reasons. One, there were only two teams in the WNBA this offseason that had an open coaching job, and the Aces were not one of them. Secondly, many insiders and fans thought it would be impossible to pry Hammon away from the NBA (especially after getting multiple offers last offseason), much less from Gregg Popovich and the Spurs.

This is a bit of a homecoming for Hammon. Before being hired as an assistant to Popovich and the Spurs, Hammon was a legend in the WNBA, lighting up teams as an undrafted point guard. Her excellence led to her jersey being retired by the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2016, and the Ring of Honor back in 2015.

Now, Becky Hammon is coming back to the WNBA in a completely different role, though her goal remains the same: to win a championship. She’ll have an interesting army at her disposal, including former Rookie of the Year A’ja Wilson. Hopefully, her Spurs pedigree rubs off on the Aces, as they try to win a championship in the next season.
