The Boston Celtics have a desire to acquire embattled San Antonio Spurs superstar Kawhi Leonard via a trade, but such a transaction seems to be highly unlikely as of the moment.

According to a source of The Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett, the Celtics have contacted San Antonio, but the conversation did not bear any fruitful result in favor of Boston.

A Western Conference source with an interest in the proceedings told the Herald the Spurs did have a brief discussion with the Celts today, but there was no real negotiation. It was the first contact between the teams since before the draft, but even those talks did not include the C’s making an offer. That brief call, according to two league sources, went nowhere.

The Spurs have been waiting for offers from parties interested in acquiring Kawhi Leonard, who has asked San Antonio’s management to ship him to another team. The Celtics are among those viewed by many as a possible destination for Leonard, worthy of San Antonio’s consideration, given the former’s trove of picks and moveable young assets the Spurs could have in exchange of the talented swingman.

Leonard played in only nine games last season due to an enigmatic quadriceps injury. The uncertainty with regards to Leonard’s health and his vague level of assurance that he would stay with his team after the 2018-19 season are making it difficult for the Celtics to come up with the right configuration of assets they would assemble together in a trade package for San Antonio. Leonard has one more year left on his current deal and is bound to become an unrestricted free agent next year.
