Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton apparently got paid $10,000 per month by head coach Sean Miller when he was playing at the University of Arizona, according to Jeff Borzello and Mark Schlabach of ESPN.

The Suns drafted Ayton with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Federal prosecutors on Wednesday played a recording to the jury of a phone call in which former Arizona assistant Emanuel “Book” Richardson told aspiring agent Christian Dawkins that Wildcats coach Sean Miller was paying star center Deandre Ayton $10,000 per month while he was enrolled there.

College players don't get paid by the NCAA, so a lot of high-level athletes such as Ayton get money under the table. Meanwhile, the coaches make millions of dollars from the schools. Universities have multiple streams of revenues, while the players don't make anything.

Ayton averaged 16.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game for the Suns during his rookie season. He shot 58.5 percent from the field. The Suns finished with the worst record in the Western Conference again. They are currently looking for a new head coach.

These type of things are going to continue until the NCAA starts paying its student athletes.
