He's been one of the more consistent point producers in the NHL during his career, and he's once again set to become a free agent. Tyler Toffoli, who played last season with the New Jersey Devils and Winnipeg Jets while amassing an impressive output of 33 goals and 22 assists. It marked the second straight season in which he eclipsed the 30-goal mark, and he'll be an attractive option for teams who need additional scoring depth.

At 32 years of age, he still has a handful of productive seasons ahead of him and won't be commanding superstar money in his next contract. He could prove to be an affordable option for teams looking to add a valuable scoring punch, but who are the best fits?

According to NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun, it isn't “surprising” that Toffoli is set to hit the open market and will earn himself a new deal, via The New York Times:

“It’s time for the goal machine known as Tyler Toffoli to finally get paid…and while he enjoyed his time in Winnipeg after the trade this season, he’s headed to market, which is not surprising.”

Which teams could provide the best fit for Toffoli? One potential fit includes a reunion with an old friend, while another destination would see him replacing the offense lost by a recently retired veteran.

New Jersey Devils

As you remember, Toffoli began last season with the Devils before eventually being traded to Winnipeg. It's clear that Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald is a fan of Toffoli, and left the door open to the possibility of a reunion between the two sides, via James Nichols of New Jersey Hockey Now:

“Tyler’s a great kid,” Fitzgerald said shortly after dealing Toffoli to the Jets. “I would do that trade seven days [a week], twice on Sunday all over again. He’s our leading scorer and a great kid in a great locker room. He was everything that I thought he would be. He’s a player that I have an interest in the offseason if he’s interested in New Jersey. Those are things we’ll kind of look into as the summer comes and see where players are at, but it was just an opportunity for me to grab some assets for a player that were unsure if he was going to be able to come back.”

Toffoli fit in well with the Devils, scoring 26 goals in the 61 games he played in prior to being dealt. With new head coach Sheldon Keefe behind the bench, he could consider a return to the swamps of New Jersey.

Dallas Stars

The Stars are fresh off the disappointment of having blown a two games to one series lead in the Western Conference Final against the Edmonton Oilers, and veteran forward Joe Pavelski announced that his career in the National Hockey League has come to an end. During the regular season, he was one of Dallas' more consistent performers, scoring 27 goals with 40 assists.

With $5.5 million freed up, Stars general manager Jim Nill might see Toffoli as a suitable replacement. Toffoli could seamlessly join emerging star Wyatt Johnston, who often played alongside Pavelski.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs, coming off another Round 1 playoff disappointment, have several pending free agents, such as Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi, who might play elsewhere next season. While their futures are still uncertain, Toffoli could be an intriguing option to replace one or both in the Toronto lineup.

There is already a past connection between Toffoli and current Leafs general manager Brad Treliving, who acquired him while with the Calgary Flames in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens in 2022. A reunion between the two sides could make sense, according to Jonas Siegel of The Athletic.

“Here’s one thing you should know about Tyler Toffoli,” Siegel wrote. “Brad Treliving is a longtime fan. Treliving’s biggest in-season trade as an NHL GM came in Feb. 2022 when he acquired Toffoli from Montreal.”

Toffoli would not only add scoring power, but would also bring valuable Stanley Cup experience, which the team sorely lacks.
