Tyler Toffoli has played for four different Canadian teams since being traded from the Los Angeles Kings to the Vancouver Canucks back in 2020. And with his contract set to expire on July 1, there's at least one team north of the border the veteran sniper won't be signing with.

Toffoli will not ink an extension with the Winnipeg Jets after the team was ousted in the first-round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs yet again in 2024, at least according to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun.

“It’s time for the goal machine known as Tyler Toffoli to finally get paid. You may remember last time he went to the UFA market was in that wonky October 2020 pandemic year, and between the flat cap and other circumstances, he was a Day 3 bargain for Montreal, signing a four-year deal at a $4.25 million AAV,” reported the insider on Friday.

“And while he enjoyed his time in Winnipeg after the trade this season, he’s headed to market, which is not surprising.”

After playing for five teams in four seasons — the Canucks, Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils and Jets — Toffoli's play has earned him a lucrative pact in both value and term this summer.

Toffoli has averaged 33 goals per 82 games since the trade, per LeBrun, scoring 115 goals in 287 games and remaining a top-six sniper at 32-years-old.

“You know what you're getting with this guy,” asserted LeBrun.

And after moving from city to city for nearly half a decade, expect Toffoli to pick a place where he'll have the kind of stability he had in his early career with the Kings.

Toffoli was a cornerstone for the Kings after being drafted in the second-round (No. 47 overall) in the 2010 NHL Draft. He spent nearly a decade in the organization, but the most successful was his rookie season.

Besides breaking onto the scene to the tune of 29 points in 62 games in his first full campaign in 2013-14, Toffoli potted seven goals and 14 points in 26 postseason contests. The Kings would overcome an 0-3 hole in the first round to the San Jose Sharks, miraculously winning the series in seven games.

Just as impressive is what the team did afterwards, marching all the way to the 2014 Stanley Cup Final and dispatching the New York Rangers in five games to win their second championship in three seasons.

Los Angeles has not won a playoff round since. Toffoli has had better luck, and it's likely the veteran chooses a place where he can compete for another championship in 2024 and beyond.

“It is unclear what type of contract he is looking for, but another four-year agreement could be in the cards with a club in need of more scoring punch in their lineup,” reported The Fourth Period on Friday. “The Los Angeles Kings and Vancouver Canucks, two of Toffoli’s former teams, expressed interest in him during the season and could be among the clubs that pursue him this July.”

Regardless of where he ends up, Toffoli should continue to score goals in 2024-25 and beyond.
