Kirk Cousins' status with the Minnesota Vikings has been one of the main talking points of the offseason. With a new coach and general manager in place, it seemed unclear at first whether the new heads would stick with the quarterback of the last regime. Recent reports, though, reveal that the franchise will stick with Cousins.

However… there might be some discomfort Vikings fans will feel after hearing this latest rumor. According to Jordan Schultz, Kirk Cousins is unwilling to take a pay cut, and is looking at a potential $40 million per year contract extension.

While fans might undoubtedly get a little infuriated at Cousins, it's absolutely the right move for the Vikings quarterback's future. Cousins is 33, and is likely just a few years away from retirement. Seeking a contract that will set him and his family for life makes sense for him, especially since it's hard to get a new contract as a quarterback.

However, there are of course major team implications if the Vikings award Cousins this contract. A $40 million contract will have drastic effects on how this roster will be constructed. The front office could obviously restructure the contract as needed, but moves like this need to be followed up by significant success.

Thus far, the Vikings have failed to achieve that success. They've missed the playoffs three times in four years, with the team always hovering at the .500 mark. With how competitive the league has been recently, that mark isn't enough to get into the postseason. It will be interesting to see how the new management handles their first big challenge this offseason.
