It's been nearly half a year since news of Brittney Griner's arrest in Russia broke out. The former WNBA superstar was arrested on charges of drug possession after a vape pen was confiscated from her at the airport. Since then, many of her fellow American sports figures have pleaded for the government to work on her case.
One of these figures was US soccer star Megan Rapinoe, who had a rather subtle way of supporting Brittney Griner. Rapinoe was set to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from US President Joe Biden. To show support for her peer, Rapinoe had the letters BG embroidered on the blazer she was wearing, along with flowers. (via CNN)
This gesture comes a day after the WNBA star pleaded guilty to the drug charges levied against her. According to experts, Griner could face up to ten years in prison depending on how the trial goes.
Rapinoe commented on this recent development on her Instagram stories. There, she strongly reiterated that despite the guilty plea, the US government should remain hard at work to make sure Griner gets home safely.

Experts on Russian laws and the country's relationship to the US believe that Griner's guilty plea could be the start of a potential prisoner swap. Said experts cite the case of Trevor Reed, who pleaded guilty in Russia a few days prior to his release.
