The L.A. Clippers' heartbreaking playoff campaign might force the front office to make some key roster tweaks this offseason. You cannot discount the fact that Kawhi Leonard and Serge Ibaka's absence contributed to their loss in the Western Conference Finals. However, there are also other factors that they should look into in their current crop.
As such, the Clippers may have to part ways with several of their players in exchange for key players of another team.
The following trade proposals are unrealistic because the players the Clippers are about to ship out may either possess little trade value or the other team does not need them at all.
The Clippers should still try to offer a trade package that includes Patrick Beverley and Ivica Zubac. Yes, these two have been key for the Clippers. But there are good enough reasons why they should move forward with their title chase without the two.
Clippers receive: Kevin Love, Collin Sexton
Cavaliers receive: Patrick Beverley, Ivica Zubac, Luke Kennard, 2021 First Round Pick
Kevin Love has been the subject of rumors for most of the year. Injuries seem to have taken a toll on the one-time NBA champion and he may be at the very tail end of his career. The Cavaliers front office has sent signals that they intend to move forward with their new young center, Jarrett Allen.
Collin Sexton, too, has been the subject of various trade rumors. While the guard showed off his offensive prowess last season, there are lingering doubts if he's actually making the team better. There are concerns about his decision-making, his lack of a fluid jump shot, among others. In addition, he's also due a contract extension that the Cavaliers are not sure they're willing to offer.
The Clippers can take advantage of the Cavs' situation by offering Patrick Beverley and Ivica Zubac — two players who have been a key part of their playoff campaigns over the last few years. However, their recent showing in the playoffs just might be enough for the front office to place them on the trade block.
While Zubac is a decent big man, there are instances where he seems to lack the bulk and presence of defense. More importantly, Zubac is very limited on the offensive end, often relying on putbacks and occasional pick-and-roll plays. Beverley, for all the intensity he brings to the floor, may actually be too aggressive in his ways to the point that it has become detrimental to the team. Clippers fans are familiar with the sight of Beverley complaining at every call then get slapped with a technical foul.
Clippers receive: Myles Turner, Justin Holiday
Pacers receive: Ivica Zubac, Patrick Beverley
Myles Turner has led the league in blocks twice: in 2019 and 2021. Despite this, the man has never been selected into the All-NBA Defensive Teams. This is just unfortunate for Turner. And this may be the reason why he's not on the radar of most teams. In addition, the Pacers' disappointing season (which was due to a host of issues with the ex-head coach), might have forced analysts and fans to completely pan the squad.
The Clippers are in need of a big man who can fortify the paint. Zubac is close to seven feet but he doesn't possess the “it” factor on defense. It was disappointing to see him just put his hands up instead of trying to go for the block whenever guards get to the paint. He may need more time to develop his defensive IQ. The Clippers, who are inching closer to that elusive Larry O'Brien trophy, do not have the luxury of time to wait. They need a solid big man now. And this comes in the form of Myles Turner.
Acquiring Turner may seem an impossible task. Though analysts have not given Turner the proper respect, the Pacers themselves know how much value the big man has. New head coach Rick Carlisle is expected to utilize the Pacers roster to the fullest. Don't be surprised if the Pacers make it to the playoffs next year. Hell, don't be surprised if Turner leads the league in blocks again but gets snubbed.
The reasons for including Beverley in this trade package have been discussed above. But just to emphasize, the Clippers need stability in the point guard spot. They already have it in Reggie Jackson (whom they'll likely re-sign) and Rajon Rondo. They don't need Beverley's services anymore. Justin Holiday — who can comfortably play both guard spots — is an add-on with plenty of worth.
