Game 1 of the 2022 Western Conference Finals between the Colorado Avalanche and Edmonton Oilers was absolutely bonkers. There were 14 total goals scored, with the Avalanche ultimately coming away with an 8-6 victory to draw first blood in the series. However, the upper-body injury to goaltender Darcy Kuemper kept Tuesday night from being fully celebratory.

Kuemper returned to the ice late as the second period began and then left the game for good not long after. Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar didn't offer any specifics when asked how severe the injury is, per ESPN's Kristen Shilton. A long-term absence for Kuemper would be a tough blow against Connor McDavid and the explosive Oilers.

That explosive Oilers offense was on display in Game 1, with Kuemper only stopping 13 of 16 shots after a terrific run so far in the regular season and playoffs. Backup Pavel Francouz stopped 18 out of 21 shots.

Luckily for the Avalanche, their own high-powered offense was even more dominant. Colorado scored three goals in the first period and then four in the second to take a 7-4 lead into the final period. The Oilers made things interesting with two consecutive goals, but Gabriel Landeskog sealed the deal with one last goal in the waning moments.

Seven different Avalanche players scored goals, with J.T. Compher leading the way with two. Defenseman Cale Makar had a goal and a pair of assists to lead Colorado with three points on the night.

While it was important to get this one, all eyes will be on Kuemper's status. Game 2 is on Colorado on Thursday night.
