The Columbus Blue Jackets have made a major decision on Patrik Laine amid the star forward's upper-body injury. The team announced on Monday that they have put Laine on the injured reserve, which means that he will not see action for at least seven days. However, Columbus also said that the IR designation of Laine is retroactive to Oct. 20.

“The Columbus Blue Jackets have placed forward Patrik Laine on Injured Reserve retroactive to October 20 and have recalled forward Dmitri Voronkov from the @monstershockey.”

Laine suffered the said injury during last Friday's contest against the Calgary Flames when he was hit late in the game by defenseman Rasmus Andersson. The NHL had already handed a four-game suspension without pay for Rasmus for charging.

In the four games Laine has played so far in the 2023-24 NHL regular season, he's managed to collect a goal and an assist for two points. With Laine out for at least the next several days, the Blue Jackets will likely see Boone Jenner center the top line alongside Johnny Gaudeau on his left and Kirill Marchenko on his right.

Laine's absence will be felt by the Blue Jackets despite his meager production to date. Columbus is in the middle of the road with its offense that is averaging 3.0 goals per game — 17th in the league. That said, they have won both of their last two games. They will look to sustain their form even without Laine when they host the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday night at
Nationwide Arena.
