The WNBA is amid the start of an exciting new era. The league received an influx of elite talent from the 2024 Draft, and positive changes to how franchises operate continue to take place. One such change is expanding charter flights for teams. Moreover, New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart gave an eye-opening night on the league's travel efforts as the season prepares to start.
Stewart praised the WNBA's move to increase charter flight opportunities and believes things can get better. She gave her thoughts in an elaborate X post on Monday.
“2 out of 5 WNBA teams traveling today are on WNBA charters – and that’s a win. It could be a bigger one if the W allowed teams who were not offered League charters to secure their own until a full 12 team solution is ready…Trip #1 of the season – Charter Bus,” Stewart wrote alongside a bus emoji on X.
It is great to hear that some teams are already gaining charter flight privileges. Breanna Stewart is happy to see the league move swiftly for progress. Yet, she believes those who have yet to be offered the flights should be able to secure their own plane until all teams can get access.
It sounds like the WNBA has to approve charter flight plans if a team takes it upon itself to get a plane. Surely, the league will come up with a plan to make sure everyone travels safely and efficiently.
In the meantime, the first week of action for the 2024 WNBA season will be sure to entertain fans and analysts.
Stewart's New York Liberty squad enters the season with a good chance to make a deep run. The Liberty reached the 2023 WNBA Finals but fell short 3-1 to the Las Vegas Aces. Stewart and her team are ready to return strong though.
Breanna Stewart, Liberty headline stacked lineup of 2024 WNBA teams
Stewart had a tremendous season in 2023. She averaged 23.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.6 blocks, and 1.5 steals in 40 games. The 29-year-old led the Liberty to an impressive 32-8 record, which earned the team the top spot in the Eastern Conference. As a result, Stewart earned her second league MVP award.
The star forward is gearing up for another strong season alongside multiple star contributors. Nevertheless, the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces will not let the Liberty or any other team have anything easy.
Las Vegas returns as the favorite to win the 2024 WNBA Championship. Their highly-touted squad is led by superstar sixth-year-forward A'ja Wilson. Wilson put up a stat line of 22.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.2 blocks, and 1.4 steals per game. She led the Aces to a league-leading 34-6 record and a title for the second consecutive year.
Wilson and the Aces reign atop the league, but the next generation of stars want to dethrone them.
Former Iowa women's basketball guard Caitlin Clark was the first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. She looks to help the Indiana Fever make the postseason and compete with the best teams in the league. A handful of other new stars including Cameron Brink, Kamilla Cardoso, Rickea Jackson, and Angel Reese will also be helping their respective teams make a run.
All in all, the 2024 WNBA season could go down as one of the most iconic in history. Developments like charter flights are only scratching the surface of the positive things the league is heading toward.
