When the Cleveland Browns drafted Johnny Manziel in 2014, many hoped that it would mark the end of a futile era in Cleveland. That included owner Jimmy Haslam, who was so excited about the pick that he invited people in to watch the team make it.

In a report posted by ESPN.com’s Seth Wickersham, Haslam invited friends, family, and even team sponsors into the team's war room on draft day to watch as the draft unfolded. For the 2014 Browns, that draft was a pivotal one, as the team came into it with 10 total picks and needing a quarterback.

The Browns began their draft by trading down in the draft, then trading up to select cornerback Justin Gilbert. From there, the team had its eyes set on wide receiver Brandin Cooks, but Haslam reportedly wanted Manziel once the quarterback began dropping down the draft board.

According to the story, many in the Browns camp wanted to wait and select Teddy Bridgewater in the second round, but Haslam had apparently soured on the quarterback thanks to his handshake “rubbing Haslam the wrong way.”

Despite “significant concerns” regarding Manziel, the team drafted him anyway, and as we all know, that didn’t work out for them. The report goes on to say that many in the Browns organization weren’t happy about Manziel, including Brian Hoyer, the starting quarterback for the team at the time.

Thankfully for the Browns, the team seems to have come out of their rough patch of dysfunction with a true franchise quarterback and a legitimate defense to build around. Still, many fans and pundits will remember the rough years that it took them to get there.
