The NBA is popularly known as one of the most progressive sports leagues in the United States, and the world. Going all the way back to the Civil Rights movement in the middle of the 20th century, to LeBron James and Co.'s efforts to bring about sweeping civil change, NBA voices have always been at the forefront of progress. In the wake of a recent wave of Asian and Asian-American hatred stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic (widely considered to have its origins in Asia), an NBA player has placed his voice at the forefront of support to stop acts of hatred towards Asians and Asian-Americans: Chicago Bulls point guard Coby White.

When asked about his stance and active support of the movement, Coby White gave a shout out to friend and Bulls athletic trainer Arnold Lee, and elaborated on his continued active support:

On why he continues to support the movement to stop Asian hate:

“When it first started I saw a lot on Twitter and social media and now it's starting to die down. Stop Asian hate…is just starting to die down so I'm just trying to keep that alive.”

On his relationship with Lee being a personal motivation for him:

“I wanted to support in an way that I can…It means a lot to him.”

The Chicago Bulls are currently jockeying for a spot in the 2021 NBA Playoffs, and are definitely making an active push for the postseason, as evidenced by their acquisition of All-Star Nikola Vucevic. But to Coby White and many others, there really are more important things than basketball. Shout out to White for keeping it real. Your voice means more than you will ever know.
