It looks like time may be running out for Nikola Mirotic and Bobby Portis to smooth things over.

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Mirotic is “ramping up” activity for the Chicago Bulls. But he and Portis still have not spoke to each other since Portis punched him during a preseason practice, landing Mirotic in the hospital.

The incident occurred on Oct. 17, and Portis has since apologized for punching his Bulls teammate. But despite his overtures, Mirotic has maintained that he will not play with Portis, as he told Cowley earlier this month.

Sources told the Sun-Times on Friday that Mirotic hasn’t softened on his stance that he wants either Portis or himself traded, maintaining he can no longer share a locker room with Portis. Mirotic’s camp first let the Bulls know last weekend that it was a “me or him’’ situation.

Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg told the Sun-Times he expects to have Mirotic back on the floor soon.

‘‘Niko had a really good week of workouts,’’ Hoiberg said. ‘‘He’s continuing to ramp up his activity. He had good strength workouts and he’s increasing his workload on the floor, so we’re hoping to get him back with the team shortly.’’

With Mirotic eyeing a return to basketball and Portis currently seeing minutes, something has to give soon. Portis was already suspended by the team for eight games as a result of this incident, and the other Bulls players have recently come to the defense of Portis.

It appears that if anything is going to happen, it has to be on Mirotic's side. But so far, he has not budged. And if he doesn't, the Bulls may look into trading him rather than Portis.
