The Calgary Flames put a monstrous $80 million extension on the table for Johnny Gaudreau, but he ultimately turned it down and decided to go sign with the Columbus Blue Jackets, a team that isn't even a contender. It was a puzzling decision that left a lot of the NHL world frankly confused and even after inking a seven-year deal for less money, Gaudreau has yet to provide a legitimate explanation for leaving Calgary.

Well, the city is clearly pissed and you can't blame them. News channels are also not holding back on the Gaudreau trolls, with this CBC anchor firing a savage shot at the star.

Savage. Johnny Gaudreau has left a lot of Flames fans angry though and it's understandable. He was the face of this franchise for many years and they were willing to give him the world in order to stay in Alberta.

Gaudreau initially said he left for family reasons. But in his introductory press conference with the Jackets on Thursday, the veteran didn't even mention it:

“That’s something that I was not going to talk about today. I wanted to focus on Columbus and then I was going to get to that after,” Gaudreau told reporters at Thursday. “But Calgary was a special place for me. I was part of their organization for 12 years, and I loved every second I was there. But for me, I think it was just time for me to make a little bit of a change.

“I’ll leave it at that, but it was a special place for me and I loved it there. The fans were great to me.”

Johnny Gaudreau played for 12 years in Calgary and to abruptly leave without reason, well, not one that anyone is aware of, is quite odd. The Flames just lost their best player to a team who can barely make the playoffs. It will sting for a while, there is no doubt about it.
