The St Louis Cardinals optioned infielder Paul DeJong to the minor leagues on Tuesday. DeJong is a former All-Star who was expected to play a big role for the Cardinals in 2022 after the team ended up not signing Trevor Story over the offseason. However, the veteran infielder labored to open the season and will try to find his groove in Triple-A.

DeJong, a 2019 All-Star, has slashed .130/.209/.208 with a .417 OPS and one home run at the big-league level in 2022. He was productive from 2017-2020 with the Cardinals and spent most of his time at shortstop. DeJong's 2019 All-Star campaign saw him finish with a .233/.318/.444 line with 30 home runs and 78 RBI.

However, his decline has been steady, and he hit under .200 with an OPS south of .700 in 2021. He still flashed some power, though, with 19 home runs. Additionally, DeJong dealt with injuries throughout the season, which ultimately hampered his overall production. The Cardinals were hopeful that he could rebound and enjoy a strong 2022 season. His defense has remained steady but the bat simply has not been there. The offensive struggles have become too much ignore, so Paul DeJong is officially heading to the minors.

Tommy Edman is expected to become the Cardinals' everyday shortstop. The speedy utility player is slashing an impressive .292/.393/.458 with three home runs and seven stolen bases for St Louis. Edman's bat control, speed, defensive prowess, and developing power have Cardinals fans excited for what his future may hold.

As for DeJong, there is a possibility he could rejoin the team at some point down the road. For now, he will focus on getting back to the basics in the minor leagues.

The Cardinals will look to keep playing quality baseball with Nolan Arenado leading the way.
