The St. Louis Cardinals first made sure to extend veteran catcher Yadier Molina. Now, they've shifted their focus to Adam Wainwright, who is still pitching at the tender age of 40-years-old.
Per Derrick Goold of the St.Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals have a one-year deal ready and waiting for their big right-hander if he decides to return in 2022. Wainwright was just named the NL Pitcher of the Month in August after absolutely dominating with a 1.43 ERA in six starts. In fact, him and his battery mate, Molina, made their 300th career start together on Friday night against the Brewers.
These two are the epitome of loyalty. They've both played for the Cardinals their entire careers and are still the faces of the franchise. Although Wainright doesn't have the same zip on his fastball, the three-time All-Star has still been very effective, going 14-7 with a 2.91 ERA in 2021 as St.Louis continues to chase down a Wild Card spot in the NL.
At this point, it's unknown if Wainwright will hang them up after this season. But based on his numbers, he still has a lot left in the tank. If he in fact decided to return, the Cardinals will have a contract waiting with his name on it. With Molina set to be back in 2022, that will likely sway Wainwright towards the same. But, only time will tell.
