After allowing Kelly Olynyk, Amir Johnson, and Tyler Zeller to walk away from the team in order to clear cap space, the Boston Celtics have now added depth to their center rotation after they recently came to terms with veteran big man Aron Baynes.

The deal is set at $4.3 million, which will give the C’s short-term relief in their front court and provide Al Horford with a serviceable backup whenever he takes a breather during games. The development was reported by Shams Charania of The Vertical, who also indicated that the 30-year-old Australian international will be in Beantown for one year.

Baynes has spent the last two seasons with the Detroit Pistons where he became the reliever of Andre Drummond. He has career averages of 5.2 points and 4.1 rebounds in 14.1 minutes per game, but more than his production, it’s his toughness and energy off the bench that makes him very valuable.

Despite losing more than $2 million after he opted out of the final year of his contract with the Pistons, he is now in a better situation as the Celtics are considered a strong contender for the title next season.
