Boston Celtics president Danny Ainge is “seriously engaged” in talks with Marcus Smart's agent Happy Walters for a potential four-year deal ranging from $46-to-50 million, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

According to Jordan Schultz of Yahoo Sports, the deal could range between $48-to-52 million, potentially giving the defensive stalwart a few more millions for his trouble.

The Celtics have remained intent in retaining Smart, having turned down trade inquiries for his services in the past. Boston is currently at a $115 million payroll for next season, while their threshold before entering the tax bracket is $123 million. Signing Smart to a long-term deal would put them roughly $5 million over the tax line, depending on how the deal is structured.

Smart had previously said he sees himself being worth more than the $12-to-16 million annual valuation he was expected to command in free agency, but it seems like the Celtics won't budge much from a $12 million per year range to keep him.

The 6-foot-4 guard has elite defensive skills and a great all-around game, but lacks consistent shooting, which has greatly decreased his value in a relatively dry market for free agents after major money was doled out during the first few days of free agency.

Smart has wanted to remain with the Celtics, but it's also hopeful to lock down a long-term agreement with the team, ensuring his place in the team fro the next few years.

The Celtics are loaded at the point guard position with Kyrie Irving as the starter and two quality backups in Smart and Terry Rozier.
