The Boston Celtics secured a 109-101 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday in the opening game of their first-round playoffs match-up. Unfortunately, it came with quite a cost after Gordon Hayward sustained an ankle injury.

New reports have now surfaced pertaining to the status of the 30-year-old small forward, and at the moment, it's not looking too good.

For starters, Celtics insider Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe reported that Hayward was seen in crutches after the game:

When probed for more details about the injury, even Boston head coach Brad Stevens could not provide a clear answer.

The injury was earlier diagnosed as a severe ankle sprain, so looking at the brighter side, it is very much possible that Gordon Hayward will be able to make a return sooner rather than later. All this will depend on his MRI though, but Bostons is certainly hoping for the best.

Hayward finished the contest with 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting, along with four rebounds, three assists and three steals in 34 minutes of action. He did not exactly light up the box score on Monday, but there's no denying that he remains a key piece for the Celtics moving forward.

Prayers up for Hayward, who himself has been plagued with injuries throughout his tenure with the Celtics. For his and Boston's sake, fans are surely hoping that his latest injury is nothing more than the typical ankle sprain.
