Apparently, Boston Celtics legend Kevin Garnett requested to be presented first in the Hall of Fame enshrinement of the Class of 2020, and for a good but funny reason.

According to Garnett himself, he wanted to go first  since he wanted fellow Celtics great Bill Russell to hear his speech. After all, he expected the 87-year-old to fall asleep later on in the ceremony.

“I told them I wanted to go first,” Garnett said in his Hall of Fame speech while smiling, per Tim Bontemps of ESPN. “Because I know we've got the OGs in here. I know y'all have got a bedtime in a minute. I wanted Bill Russell to hear my speech before y'all fell asleep.”

Kevin Garnett always keeps it real, but it's hard to blame Bill Russell if he often falls asleep in ceremonies like that. Hey, a lot of us probably went through that in formal events–starting with a yawn that eventually turned into sleepiness.

All jokes aside, though, KG made sure to honor Russell and the other greats before him in his speech, emphasizing the impact they had on him and his career.

“It's a big deal for me to pay homage to the ones that came before me,” the one-time Celtics champion added.

For what it's worth, Garnett and Russell have one of the coolest friendships in the NBA despite playing in different generations. Russell, for his part, has shared his admiration for Garnett's game numerous times during his playing career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets.

We don't know if Russell eventually fell asleep, but he probably wasn't to given the fact that he also received an award–the 2020 Mannie Jackson Human Spirit Award–in the event.
