Boston Celtics shooting guard Marcus Smart has yet to make an All-Star team or pick up any notable awards from the league. However, he is well-respected in Boston, and on Monday, he picked up a piece of hardware as a result.

The 25-year-old was named the recipient of the 2019 Red Auerbach award. The award, as the Celtics described in a 2006 press release, is given to a player that “best exemplify the spirit and meaning of what it means to be a Boston Celtic.” The annual award is given to an active player selected by the franchise patriarch.

The award is named after Celtics legend of the same name. Red Auerbach was hired to coach the team in 1950 and remained in the organization until his passing in 2006. During that time, he also served as the team's general manager, president and vice chairman. He led the Celtics to 16 championships during his time with the team.

This season, Smart is averaging 8.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists while shooting 42.0 percent. While his numbers don't jump off the page, the young guard's impact both on and off the court is felt throughout Boston. He is a good defender and his offensive production has increased since his promotion to a starting role in late November. Perhaps, most importantly, he is well-known for his contributions to local charities.

Previous winners of the award include Kyrie Irving in 2018, Al Horford in 2017 and Isaiah Thomas in 2016.
