The Boston Celtics have already made a decision on the future of their young big man, Tyler Zeller. The team has reportedly waived him, making him an unrestricted free agent and opening up a roster spot in the process.

According to a report made by Keith P. Smith of Celtics Blog, the C’s had a deadline to make on July 2 if they wanted to guarantee his $8 million contract for next season or not, leading to their choice to part ways with him instead.

“The Boston Celtics announced today that they have waived Tyler Zeller after three seasons with the club. Zeller had a fully non-guaranteed contract for the 2017-18 season that would have become fully guaranteed at $8 million if he was not waived by July 2nd.”

The 27-year-old North Carolina product was selected 17th overall in the 2012 draft by the Dallas Mavericks and was traded on the night to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was then moved once again, back in 2014, to the Celtics, where he has played a limited role the past two seasons. After his best campaign as a pro in 2014-2015, Zeller fell from their rotation and became a third string center for them.

Despite the setback, Zeller is expected to generate some interest from teams looking for a serviceable big man they can add to their roster. With his 7.0 points and 4.4 rebounds in only 17.8 minutes per game throughout his career, he can turn out to be a low-risk, high-reward prospect for any team who will be able to secure his services.
