The Detroit Lions added to their backup quarterback arsenal on Friday. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Detroit is swapping a 2022 seventh-round selection with the Cleveland Browns for quarterback David Blough.

Undrafted out of Purdue, the rookie quarterback played Detroit on Thursday night. Blough went 11-of-17 for 115 yards and two interceptions. Despite the measly stat line, the Lions clearly liked what they saw, as they played a trio of incumbent backups in Tom Savage, Josh Johnson, and Luis Perez.

Blough went 25-of-43 for 271 yards, two touchdowns passes, and two interceptions during preseason play.

He wasn't likely to make the Browns' roster with Baker Mayfield, Drew Stanton, and Garrett Gilbert already in place. However, he was a candidate to make the practice squad if he cleared waivers. Instead, he'll likely stick on as Matt Stafford's backup, with Savage and Johnson vying to join the club.

According to the Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett, Lions general manager Bob Quinn is taking a year-by-year approach to his backup quarterback spot and is going to look in different markets.

“It's something that you got to have the right guy in the draft, or the right guy in free agency that makes the right sense at the right price at the right time to kind of just solidify (the backup quarterback spot). And I think a lot of teams in the league, you go through it now, they're in the same boat we are. A lot of teams are.”

Could Blough be the answer he was looking for at second-string quarterback? We'll find out soon enough.
