When Kawhi Leonard requested for a trade, he made it clear that he wants to go the Los Angeles Lakers. But given the Paul George and LeBron James drama, the other team in LA seem to be creeping in on Leonard.

Basketball pundit Stephen A. Smith said that the Clippers intend to move some pieces out have enough cap room for a max player like Leonard.

“They intend to clear enough money to go after a max player and their target is Kawhi Leonard because they don't believe that it's a surefire bet that Kawhi Leonard will end up with the Lakers.”

The Clippers recently closed a deal with the Washington Wizards. They sent Austin Rivers in exchange for Marcin Gortat.

The move, for the Wizards' part, was done to squash the rumored beef between Gortat and the other players. They also wanted to add more depth to their line up, according to Wizards general manager Ernie Grunfeld per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN:

“Acquiring Austin gives us another versatile, experienced player who provides scoring and playmaking. He is coming off a career year and his ability to create offense for himself and others will help our second unit and allow us to play a variety of lineups throughout the season.”

Meanwhile, for the Clippers, it was an effort to find another starting big man as DeAndre Jordan is highly expected to opt out of his contract. Even if he opts in, the Clippers intend to trade him midseason.

But for Smith, the moves by the Clippers are efforts to make room for Leonard. Will they land the defensive stalwart? Is Leonard even considering the Clippers?
