Mike McCarthy’s tenure with the Dallas Cowboys seemed to be under fire after their humiliating loss in the Wild Card round. Fans and critics have been speculating about McCarthy’s job security ever since that fateful game. However, according to some sources, the ex-Green Bay coach has been given the green light to stay.

According to Jori Epstein of USA Today, McCarthy has been given assurance by the Cowboys management that he’ll be staying for the 2022 season. The assurance came as early as after the loss to the 49ers in the Wild Card round, based on Epstein’s reports. (via USA Today)

“The assurance came as early as in conversations after the Cowboys’ 23-17 wild-card loss to the San Francisco 49ers and as recently as this week after Saints coach Sean Payton announced he was stepping down, a person with knowledge of the conversations told USA TODAY Sports.”

After an injury-filled 2020 season, McCarthy’s second year with the Cowboys proved to be much more fruitful. His team, boosted by the return of Dak Prescott, came roaring back into the league. They easily took control of the NFC East with a 12-5 record and had a home game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Despite optimism from Cowboys fans, however, the team proceeded to flop in the Wild Card round. Questionable play-calling towards the end of the game became the headlines after (along with Jerry Jones’ disappointment), seemingly pointing at Mike McCarthy getting fired.

However, the Cowboys front office seems to have deemed it too early to pull the plug on the McCarthy experiment. Jerry Jones and co. are hoping that he can lead this team again to glory, as they look to have playoff success next season.
