At the trade deadline, one of the biggest rumors out there was Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom getting sent to the New Jersey Devils. Well, it's finally happened, via Frank Seravalli.

There are still details to be worked out, but it does appear the Devils are acquiring Markstrom. At 34 years old, Markstrom isn't exactly a spring chicken anymore but New Jersey needs help in net. This is a good move for them.

A trade for Markstrom between the Flames and Devils almost happened at the deadline, but it fell through. That reportedly left him upset with Calgary. The writing was on the wall for Markstrom to be moved, with NJ showing the most interest.

Solid move for Devils

The Devils just hired Sheldon Keefe as their next head coach after a season where they finished second-last in the Metropolitan Division. They ranked 26th in the NHL with 3.43 goals allowed per game. Needless to say, another goaltender was a necessity.

Markstrom is coming off a respectable campaign, posting a .905 save percentage and 2.78 GAA. He has two years left on his current contract along with a $6 million cap hit.

Calgary won't have an established netminder in 2024-25 after losing Markstrom, but the Devils certainly will. Markstrom is experienced and has compiled a 2.73 GAA in his career.

New Jersey has talent on their roster in the likes of Jesper Bratt, Jack Hughes, Timo Meier, and others. Finding a reliable goaltender was undoubtedly one of their main priorities this offseason.

A first-round pick and defenceman Kevin Bahl are heading to Calgary.

“Today’s trade demonstrates our focus on the infusion of young talented players into our roster as well as acquiring important draft capital, while maintaining our commitment as a playoff competitive team,” said Flames General Manager Craig Conroy. “We thank Jacob for his professionalism and understanding of our decision to make this trade now and at this stage in his career.”

Bahl was on Calgary's radar in the prospect of a Markstrom trade with the Devils:

“For quite some time, we had identified Kevin Bahl as a priority player. He is a strong defender with size who plays an assertive game with tremendous presence. While his 6’6”, 230-lb. frame is an imposing asset, he uses his body intelligently, has good mobility and makes smart puck decisions. Kevin fits our identity, and we are excited to acquire him now as he can continue to grow with our group.”

We'll see if Markstrom can make a big different for New Jersey next season.
