The Arizona Diamondbacks take on the Los Angeles Dodgers. Our MLB odds series has our Diamondbacks Dodgers prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Diamondbacks Dodgers.

The Arizona Diamondbacks continue to have a bumpy and generally unsatisfying 2023 MLB season. They were 50-34 in their first 84 games last season. They are 22-25 through their first 47 games this season. Their great start last year enabled them to have a really bad month of July and yet bounce back late in the season to grab a National League wild card berth and qualify for the playoffs, en route to the World Series. This year, they have not gotten off to a good start, which means that at some point in the not-too-distant future, they will need to play three or four really good weeks of baseball. They will need a 15-5 or 18-6 stretch of games to change their position in both the wild card race and in the National League West heading into early July and the All-Star break. There's a lot of talent on this team — we saw that talent flourish in October of last year — but the pieces just haven't meshed this season, and the batting order hasn't shown up nearly enough to help Arizona rise in the standings.

The Diamondbacks are already in a difficult spot. Now they need to face the Los Angeles Dodgers on the road. Arizona needs to win this series to generate real forward momentum just before Memorial Day. Arizona can't continue to lose ground, which is precisely what it did this past weekend in a home-field series loss to the Detroit Tigers (who took two of three games from the D-Backs in Phoenix).

Why The Diamondbacks Could Cover The Spread

The Diamondbacks have to start playing better. They carry more urgency into this game and this series than the 32-17 Dodgers do. Los Angeles has very clearly and comfortably established itself atop its division, with no clear-cut second-place team emerging in the National League West. The D-Backs, on the other hand, have to scramble to get back to the .500 mark and know they need to make themselves relevant in the National League wild card race.

The Dodgers, for all the games they have won so far this season, are still not hitting the baseball exceptionally well. They have been relatively ordinary on offense over the past week. They lost to Logan Webb and the Giants last Wednesday. They scored four runs or fewer in three of their four games against the Cincinnati Reds this past weekend. If Arizona holds the Dodgers under four runs, it should cover the spread in this game.

Why The Dodgers Could Cover The Spread

The Dodgers are 32-17 through 49 games, which would make you think this team has been flexing its muscles all season in the National League. Yet, that's not entirely true. The Dodgers won three of four from the Reds this past weekend despite scoring no more than four runs in three of the four games. This team is winning without elite hitting. That's scary for L.A.'s opponents in the National League West. Just wait until this team really starts hitting. The Dodgers will be borderline untouchable.

Final Diamondbacks-Dodgers Prediction & Pick

The Dodgers are winning tons of games, and they are bound to hit better than they have been. Take Los Angeles.
