The Duke Blue Devils will face the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Final Four on Saturday. Remarkably, this is the first time that the sport's biggest rivals will square off in the NCAA Tournament. But if you ask Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski about it, he'll tell you that isn't what he is focused on.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Coach Krzyzewski provided detail on exactly what he and the Duke players are concerning themselves with, and it's not their rivalry with North Carolina, noted by Sports Illustrated.

“I haven’t looked at it as us against North Carolina,” Krzyzewski said. “I’ve looked at it as, ‘we’re playing in the Final Four,’ so the history of (the rivalry) I have not paid attention to.”

The legendary Duke coach later detailed exactly why he believes these historic programs have never faced off in the NCAA Tournament.

Coach K pointed out that the consistent success of each program generally earns them higher seeds. As Krzyzewski mentioned, the committee generally does not like to put higher seeds from the same conference into the same region. So, in order for these two rival schools to meet in the tourney, it likely would have to be either the Final Four or the title game.

The closest these two schools came to playing one another was way back in 1991. Each team reached the Final Four but were on opposite sides of the bracket. Duke defeated Coach Tarkanian's UNLV Runnin' Rebels. But UNC lost to Kansas on the other half of the draw.

How sweet is the irony that we finally get the greatest rivalry in the sport of college basketball, in the Final Four, in Coach K's final season. Sounds like it was worth the wait.
