Assasin's Creed: Valhalla launches today and fans are excited. The game brings players back to pseudo-historical England but in a vastly different time period from AC: Syndicate. If you're still on the fence regarding the latest installment in the AC franchise, here's everything you need to know before you get the game.

What is AC: Valhalla?

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla is the latest entry into the vast AC series that spans across different settings and characters. Valhalla is set in London in the year 873. Players will take up the role of a Viking named Eivor as he looks for new land for his clan. Players may once again choose the gender of their player-character but the goal will still focus on the Norse clan's attempt at finding a new home. If you like trivia we featured five Viking facts to hype up the game.

The game is currently available on PC, Stadia, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 4. A PlayStation 5 version of the game will come out later this week. Players may choose to transfer their save files across different devices with the new Ubisoft Connect app.

Valhalla draws much from its predecessor AC: Odyssey as it continues the full RPG trend. Players will still be able to pick up random mini-quests across the wide-open world. The branching dialogue options when speaking with NPCs also makes a return that could directly affect the story itself.

AC games have been known to mix pseudo-historical events and modern-day plot lines. The modern-day character Layla Hassan, first introduced in AC: Origins, returns in Valhalla. Players will once again play as her in brief missions outside of Eivor's timeline.

How do I fight?

A game that focuses on Vikings and Assassins needs to have its combat down perfectly. Thankfully, Ubisoft is no stranger to designing battles and combat mechanics so AC: Valhalla will not falter in what may be its most important aspect. Valhalla will feature epic-scale battles in addition to small raids that will take place across the game's campaign.

Different enemy types will make the combat more engaging and require added agency from the player. Some of Eivor's confirmed combat capabilities include throwing axes, the ability to dual-wield pretty much all weapons, and the return of the classic hidden blade.

Ubisoft has stayed mum regarding the intricacies of the game's campaign. However, certain details regarding Eivor's involvement with the Assassin order have been revealed in the past. Eivor isn't necessarily part of the Assassin group, but he's shown to be willing to work with them due to sharing the same goal. The Vikings' demolishing the landowners of England translates to the downfall of the Templar order as well.

Time to settle down

Base management will play a grand role in the AC game like never before in the series. The past games have dabbled in customizable base mechanics but Valhalla takes everything even further. Eivor's primary goal of founding a new home for his clan ties directly into the game's base management mechanic. Players will establish a Viking settlement in England and see it grow through the game's vast campaign.

The settlement management system will feature numerous features for players to prioritize. Players can choose to construct and upgrade numerous buildings such as barracks and smithies. One key feature of the base management system is the tattoo parlor which is essential to keep Eivor and his clan clad in intricate ink patterns.

The rampant romance options in AC: Odyssey is inherited by Valhalla in a big way. The romance paths tie well into Ubisoft's idea of complete RPG mechanics for their game. Players as either version of Eivor will be able to find people to romance for themselves across the game.

What's next for AC: Valhalla?

Unfortunately for numerous PC users, the game will not be available on the immensely popular Steam platform at this time. The game's exclusivity on the Epic Games Store platform follows the trend of Ubisoft favoring the new storefront over Valve's Steam store. Yet despite the preference for Epic's platform, the game will be available on Ubisoft's Uplay launcher.

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla will receive two massive story-focused expansions in the future. Wrath of the Druids, set in Ireland, will launch sometime in 2021. The Siege of Paris will focus on one of the biggest moments in Viking History and will launch after the first expansion of the game. There will also be an exclusive quest available through the game's season pass. The Legend of Beowulf will have players explore the mystery behind the legend of Beowulf.

There so much to look forward to regarding AC: Valhalla. The game currently has a massive cache of quests and content to sift through and even more content is coming down the line. The game may be a vast departure from its sneaking roots but who wouldn't want to play as a mighty Viking?
