The injury woes for the San Francisco Giants’ starting rotation have continued, as Anthony DeSclafani is set to undergo surgery on his right ankle on July 12, manager Gabe Kapler announced ahead of the home series finale against the Chicago White Sox.

DeSclafani was placed on the 15-day injured list — retroactive to June 28 — due to right ankle inflammation. This call from the Giants came just days removed from DeSclafani’s home start against the Cincinnati Reds, where he allowed seven earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched. His ERA on the season ballooned to 9.95.

Kapler noted following the decision to place DeSclafani on the IL that there is “real concern” over the right-hander’s nagging ankle injury.

“When you’re trying to build up to be a starting pitching, hitting a wall with something as important as your drive ankle is not conducive to success going forward,” Kapler said.

“I think there’s real concern there. He’s battled through this for a really long time. He’s pushed himself. He’s rehabbed. He’s done everything he possibly can and he’s still hitting the wall.”

DeSclafani has dealt with this ankle ailment for much of the ongoing campaign. He was listed on the 10-day IL in April due to right ankle inflammation. Although he did not suffer any major setback early in his injury rehab process and was able to throw the baseball in May, the team still elected to take a more conservative route by deciding to transfer him to the 60-day IL in mid-May. In total, he was sidelined for 53 games over his first IL stint of the year.

This time around, no official timeline has been provided as to when DeSclafani may receive the green light to return to action for the reigning NL West champions.

DeSclafani opted to stay put with the Giants over the MLB free agency period, signing off on a three-year, $36 million contract.

For now, the likes of veteran starting pitchers Alex Cobb and Alex Wood may have to rise to the occasion for the Giants as they aim to remain in contention for a wild-card spot in the National League over the remainder of this season.
