The New York Giants have taken a major step toward stabilizing the franchise with the hiring of David Gettleman as their next general manager.

Gettleman has plenty of experience working in front offices across the NFL. He spent the last four years as the Carolina Panthers' general manager. Previously, he was a personnel executive with the Giants for 15 seasons.
He is just New York's fourth general manager since 1979 as he replaces Jerry Reese, who held the position for 11 years. During Gettleman's tenure with the Panthers, the team held a 40-23-1 record while winning three straight NFC South division titles and reaching Super Bowl 50.
The 66-year-old is tasked with turning around a team that is coming off an atrocious season finishing with one of the worst records in the league. One of his first assignments is hiring a new head coach after Ben McAdoo was relieved of his duties earlier this month.
Gettleman also has to decide what to do with quarterback Eli Manning. The 36-year-old is set to enter the third year of his four-year, $84 million deal, but there are plenty of questions surrounding his long-term future with the team. Along with that, aa top priority is working out a new, lucrative contract with star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
Gettleman clearly has a lot on his plate heading into the job, but his addition does bring some sense of stability back to the franchise.
