It was inevitable that Kevin Durant‘s major free agency decision to join the Golden State Warriors would create a domino effect within the organization. As well as Australian big man Andrew Bogut, another player who felt the effect was Harrison Barnes.

Barnes had served the Warriors for four years, picking up a championship in the 2014-15 season and playing a part in the greatest regular season of any NBA team in history this past season. His future as a Warrior was already in question but the nail was in the coffin when Durant, who also plays in the small forward position and took up much of the team’s cap space, was signed.

The organization meant a lot to Barnes and he wanted to ensure that he left a good impression on his former teammates. As per The Undefeated’s Marc J. Spears, Barnes texted each teammate individually, letting them know how he felt about them.

“Right after the KD decision happened, I texted everyone individually something special to them whatever it was, whatever my relationship was with them,” Barnes said. “I didn't want to do the cliche, ‘I'm out, guys.' I wanted to text each person individually and tell them that we are family and how much they meant to me.”

The Dallas Mavericks picked up Barnes after it was made clear he wouldn’t be returning. He had turned down an extension off with Golden State of $64 million over four years last season, in order to earn more when the salary cap rises. It was a risk that paid off; Barnes signed a $94 million contract for the next four years in Dallas.

The former University Of North Carolina standout now has a chance for a fresh start and his former teammates will appreciate the way in which he dealt with his exit.
