The Carolina Hurricanes have been working to acquire a replacement for Tony DeAngelo this offseason and it looks like they're on the verge of pulling off a trade to land Brent Burns from the San Jose Sharks. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Canes and Sharks are nearing an agreement on a trade to send Burns to the Canes, however, it would need to be approved by the veteran defenseman, who has a no-trade clause list that doesn't include Carolina.

With Burns nearing the end of his NHL career, it would stand to reason that he'd be interested in a trade to the Canes, who are a reasonable contender to win the Stanley Cup in 2022-23. Carolina had an excellent season, charged by one of the best defenses in hockey, and adding a proven talent like Burns to the mix would make their one-two punch of Jacob Slavin and Burns one of the most lethal combinations in the sport.

Back in 2016-17, Burns signed an eight-year, $64 million deal with the Sharks. He has three years left on that deal, and is due to make $3 million in base salary in each of the next three years, while carrying an $8 million cap hit.

Burns, 37, appeared in all 82 games for the Sharks last year, registering 54 points including 10 goals and 44 assists. He spent an average of 26:09 on the ice each game, far and away the most among Sharks skaters. He also ranked second on the team with 150 blocked shots, trailing only Mario Ferraro.

While Burns isn't a big hitter — he had just 55 hits all of last season — the Canes have plenty of enforcers already in the lineup. Instead, the veteran can focus on his game as a playmaking defenseman while also clogging up shooting lanes in front of the net.
