Tim Tebow has been out of the NFL for quite some time, but he does understand what it takes to be the quarterback of the New York Jets. While preparing himself for spring training with the New York Mets, Tebow spoke about how Sam Darnold can take the next step.

The former NFL quarterback believes Darnold's confidence is an area that is holding him back. Despite having his own questionable moments in the NFL, Tim Tebow was never afraid to make a play with his arm or legs.

Before pursuing a career in the MLB, Tim Tebow ended his career in the NFL with the Jets. However, he would only attempt eight passes as he was used sparingly in New York's offense. Nevertheless, he got to experience what it was like to play in front of the die-hard fans at MetLife Stadium.

As Darnold enters his third season, it's time for him to become the leader in the Jets locker room. For that to happen, he needs to begin exuding confidence on and off the field. Tim Tebow is trying to help Darnold get there.

In his second season in the NFL, the USC product threw for 3,024 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Even though he didn't make drastic improvements in his game, there were still some flashes of potential throughout the season… akin to what Tim Tebow showed with the Denver Broncos.

At the least, there is some stability for Darnold as he gets to work with head coach Adam Gase for a second-straight season. Hopefully, Darnold can take the next step in his career — something Tim Tebow didn't do — and become the franchise quarterback that the Jets intended him to be.

Stories of athletes are unique to each individual. Yet, it is impossible to deny that there are strands of the Tim Tebow story in the journey of Sam Darnold. We will see how Darnold's path unfolds.
