What a great day it is to be Bill Self. As Self is approaching nearly 20 years as the head coach at Kansas, the school decided on Friday to slap a good old lifetime contract on the 15 time Big 12 Conference champion coach.

It almost sounds like something that just can't be real. If this deal had come on April 1, many would've assumed it was an April Fools Day joke. Not because of anything to do with Self or Kansas' basketball program, both have been wildly successful. It seems unreal simply because of the notion of a lifetime contract being given out to a head coach. It had to be an easy decision for Self, who's nestled in to Lawrence, Kansas at the university for almost two decades now.

So basically when one year ends, add another to the backend of Bill Self's contract. The timing is interesting, given Roy Williams retirement from North Carolina was announced on Thursday. Kansas acted swiftly, making sure their coach received the ultimate safety net of a contract while assuring the university he will be around for the long haul.

The Kansas – Bill Self marriage has developed into one of the most successful ones in all of college basketball during Self's time at Kansas.

The Jayhawks won the National Championship in 2008, have won the Big 12 regular season 15 times under Self, and the Big 12 Tournament 8 times.

The contract for Self is of a different variety and has some wondering if these contracts will slowly trickle in to the coaching ranks more frequently now.
