The New York Knicks will be getting back point guard Dennis Smith Jr. for Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers after the 22-year-old missed the last 13 games.

Smith suffered an oblique strain last month but is now available to play for the Knicks, per Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.

The former ninth overall pick has had an up and down career thus far. After a promising rookie campaign with the Dallas Mavericks that saw him land a spot on the All-Rookie team, the 6-foot-2 point guard was traded in the middle of the next season in the deal that landed power forward Kristaps Porzingis in Dallas.

Expectations were high for Smith as a Knick and for the second half of his second season, the former NC State star showed that potential averaging 14.7 points and 5.4 assists for New York.

This season, however, has been a different story. Despite being on one of the worst teams in the NBA, Smith has failed to earn a significant role in his first full season as a Knick. Injuries have played a part in that but, the third-year pro has often found himself playing behind fellow young point guards in Elfrid Payton and Frank Ntilikina when healthy.

The once seemingly unlimited potential of Smith and his otherworldly athleticism have soured a bit. The point guard has started one of the 21 games he has appeared in and is averaging just 5.2 points and 2.7 assists on an inefficient 32.5 field goal percentage.

Still, just recently turning 22 years old, the story is not yet written on the former top 10 pick and the Knicks can use any help they can get as they head into the All-Star break.
