Toronto Raptors point guard Fred VanVleet becomes an unrestricted free agent once the 2020 free agency period starts. Among other teams, the New York Knicks are expected to pursue the Rockford, Illinois native.

While VanVleet would be the best player on the Knicks should he leave the Raptors for the Big Apple, some around the league don't believe he would be effective in New York, per Marc Berman of the New York Post.

The Knicks like Fred VanVleet a lot, but there’s an argument against offering him a max deal. Some league sources believe VanVleet is more prone to shine on an established team than being the lone star — as he would be on the Knicks.

VanVleet averaged 17.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game for the Raptors in 2019-20 while shooting 41.3 percent from the field, 39.0 percent from beyond the arc and 84.8 percent from the free-throw line.

While that is production the Knicks would love to get from their starting point guard, odds are VanVleet wouldn't put up those type of numbers in New York.

On the Raptors, VanVleet is the third option on offense behind All-Stars Pascal Siakam and Kyle Lowry. This gives him a lot of open looks since teams are paying more attention to Siakam and Lowry.

If he signs with the Knicks, VanVleet would probably be at the top of opposing team's scouting reports and his looks on offense would become much more difficult.

With that being said, don't be surprised if VanVleet re-signs with the Raptors early in free agency.
