Carmelo Anthony could wind up signing a one-day contract with the New York Knicks to retire with the franchise if he doesn't receive interest from another team, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Anthony has been a free agent since February. The Houston Rockets traded him to the Chicago Bulls and then the Bulls waived him. The future Hall of Famer hasn't been linked to signing with a team since:

If nothing formalizes for Anthony, executives around the league believe one strong scenario could emerge: Signing a one-day contract to retire with the Knicks, much like Amar’e Stoudemire did on July 26, 2016. Anthony could also continue waiting into the regular season, examine roster openings due to play or injury, and hope for a landing spot.

The demise of Carmelo Anthony has been sad to watch. He is, after all, one of the best scorers in NBA history.

Anthony, a 10-time All-Star, is the seventh all-time scorer in Knicks franchise history. In 412 games with the Knicks, Anthony averaged 24.7 points while shooting 44.3 percent from the field and 36.9 percent from beyond the arc.

Melo's tenure in New York was filled with drama, and the veteran scorer never lived up to the hype when he arrived from the Denver Nuggets in the 2010-11 season. Anthony only led the Knicks to the playoffs three times, but he was always loved by the fans — although he did hear some boo birds during the 2016-17 season, his last year in New York.

Hopefully, Anthony gets one more shot in the NBA. If he doesn't, it looks like Melo could retire with the Knicks.
