Rumor has it that Dennis Smith Jr. wants out of the New York Knicks, something that the young guard has denied.

When asked about whether or not things will work out in the Big Apple, Smith said he is not thinking about that and he is focusing on improving himself with the Knicks.

“I like playing for the Knicks. So whatever I’ve got to do, I’m going to take care of that’’ Smith said, per Marc Berman of The New York Post.

Apparently, however, Smith has not been happy with the team since the summer.

Berman notes that Smith's concerns over his role began when the Knicks signed fellow guard Elfrid Payton back in July, which further muddied what was already a crowded backcourt rotation.

It seems like Smith's fears have come to pass, as the 22-year-old has played in just 21 games this season and is averaging a mere 16.1 minutes in the games he has played.

Further complicating matters for Smith is that when he has gotten opportunities, he has struggled, as he is registering just 5.2 points, 2.7 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game while shooting a meager 32.5 percent from the floor, 29.3 percent from 3-point range and 50 percent from the free-throw line.

Funny enough, Smith's lack of playing time is not even completely tied to Payton, as Payton himself has appeared in just 15 contests this season for the Knicks due to injuries.

“The way I look at it, of course, you come in and you want to play,’’ Smith said of Payton on Friday. “I don’t know how much you’re supposed to feed into it. You want to see him do well. You want to do well yourself. That’s what it’s really about.’’

The Knicks acquired Smith from the Dallas Mavericks in the Kristaps Porzingis trade last January.
