Several teams were interested in Danny Green's services this offseason, including the Dallas Mavericks. Ultimately, though, the two-time NBA champion decided to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.
As part of a recent appearance on “Take it There” with Taylor Rooks, Green explained his reasoning behind this decision:
“Dallas was very interested, the Lakers were interested,” Green said of his free agency. “But the Lakers, to me, were front-runners to me because of the pieces they had now.
“Dallas has some really good pieces, but I think it would be a year or two for them to be in that conversation,” Green added. “But yes, those were the two front-runners. Outside of knowing what Toronto was able to offer, it was the Lakers and Dallas.”
The Mavs were in hot pursuit of Green over the summer, and he did have some interest in joining the team. Once his former Toronto Raptors teammate, Kawhi Leonard, decided to join the Clippers, however, the door was open for Green to sign a two-year, $30 million deal with his preferred team.
The acquisition of Danny Green has paid off in a big way for the Lakers, who are holding a Western Conference-best 49-14 overall record. Alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Los Angeles has one of the most formidable lineups in the league. As a result, the team is being viewed as a Finals favorite, but it's unclear if the 2019-20 season will resume after it was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
