Toronto Maple Leafs right winger William Nylander is trying not to take the rumors too seriously that he's getting an extension with the franchise. Still, Nylander isn't exactly shying off the rumor either. Nylander is expected to get a $92 million contract extension, per SportsNet. The forward could be receiving more than $11 million a year.
“We’ll see,” Nylander told reporters in response to the SportsNet report, per the Toronto Sun. “That would be a dream to stay here and play for such an organization. I call Toronto home.”
Nylander made the comments following another strong performance. He got two goals and an assist for the Maple Leafs in a 4-1 victory Saturday over the San Jose Sharks. On the season, Nylander has 54 points in 37 games played. He's scored 21 goals and added 33 assists. He leads the Maple Leafs in points and assists. His production continues what was a solid campaign last year, where Nylander posted a career-high in points.
Toronto is third in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The team has 47 points and won 20 games this season, and trails only the Bruins and Panthers in the division. Nylander has clearly been a big part of that success, so it's reasonable to expect the team would want to keep the forward.
Nylander has played in more than 550 career NHL games, scoring 198 goals all-time. He was drafted in the first round of the 2014 NHL draft by Toronto. The Maple Leafs next play the Sharks again on Tuesday in Toronto. The puck drops at 7:00 Eastern.
