The Dallas Mavericks released JJ Barea before the 2020-2021 season, but he's proving that he can still contribute on the basketball court elsewhere. While playing for his national squad in Puerto Rico, Barea showed that he still has some gas left in the tank.

Barea is now playing for Movistar Estudiantes in Spain, which gives him an opportunity to play for Puerto Rico nationally. Puerto Rico has been fighting for a berth to play in the AmeriCup tournament as they take part in the qualifier games.

Over the weekend, Puerto Rico took down Mexico on Friday, and they would proceed to defeat the Bahamas on Saturday. Their victory over the Bahamas was led by Barea's 26 points in the contest. Barea would make a deep three-point buzzer-beater in the first quarter and he wouldn't stop there.

During his NBA career, JJ Barea would spend 11 of his 14 seasons with the Mavericks. Barea was part of the 2010-2011 team that was able to top a stacked Miami Heat roster in the NBA Finals.

Even though Barea never had a starting role with the Mavericks, he was a vital member of their bench unit for years. However, after losing his bench role to Jalen Brunson last season, Dallas decided it was time to move on from Barea. Though, Mark Cuban rewarded Barea for his time with the franchise by signing him to a $2.6 million deal shortly before his release.

After he was released by the Mavericks, Barea had intentions of continuing his career in the NBA. While no teams expressed interest in him, Barea is making his presence felt for Puerto Rico in national competitions.
